Thyroid Surgery

The thyroid is a gland in the neck that regulates metabolism. Some conditions, including large goitres, selected nodules, or suspected thyroid cancers, may require surgery.

Overview

The thyroid is a gland in the neck that regulates metabolism. Some conditions, including large goitres, selected nodules, or suspected thyroid cancers, may require surgery.

Symptoms

Symptoms may include neck swelling, difficulty swallowing or breathing, voice changes, pressure, rapid enlargement, or symptoms of altered thyroid function.

Causes

Surgery may be considered for symptomatic benign nodules, multinodular goitre, pressure from a large goitre, suspicious nodules, confirmed cancer, or selected overactive thyroid disease.

Diagnosis

Evaluation may include thyroid blood tests, ultrasound, FNAC, CT scan for selected large goitres, and other clinically indicated investigations.

Treatment

Many thyroid disorders are managed with medication and monitoring. Surgery may remove one lobe, the whole gland, or use another appropriate procedure based on diagnosis.

Recovery

Recovery guidance covers wound care, pain management, activity, diet, follow-up, and thyroid hormone replacement when required after surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does every thyroid nodule require surgery?
No. Many thyroid nodules are benign and can be monitored. Evaluation helps determine whether an operation is necessary.
Will I need thyroid medication after surgery?
Some patients require lifelong hormone replacement, particularly after removal of the entire thyroid gland.
