Overview
Piles, also called haemorrhoids, are swollen veins in the lower rectum or around the anus that may cause bleeding, pain, itching, and discomfort.
Symptoms
Common symptoms include bright red bleeding, pain or discomfort during bowel movements, itching, swelling, mucus discharge, and painful swelling in thrombosed piles.
Causes
Increased pressure on lower rectal veins may be related to constipation, straining, prolonged toilet sitting, low-fibre diet, pregnancy, obesity, age, diarrhoea, or heavy lifting.
Diagnosis
Evaluation may include inspection, digital rectal examination, proctoscopy, and additional investigations when needed to exclude other causes of bleeding.
Treatment
Early cases may be managed with fibre, fluids, lifestyle changes, and medication. Persistent or advanced piles may need laser treatment, conventional surgery, or another appropriate procedure.
Recovery
Advice is individualized and may cover diet, hydration, bowel habits, pain management, activity, hygiene, and follow-up.
